A Final Tribute to Capt. Robert Bruton

posted Feb 27, 2016, 6:09 PM by Lana Holub   [ updated Mar 1, 2016, 6:43 PM by lana mark ]

DALLAS - Dallas Composite Squadron lost a dedicated and cherished member, Capt. Robert “Bob” Bruton, on February 8, 2016.

Capt. Bruton joined Civil Air Patrol in 2011 and served as the squadron Public Affairs Officer for five years before being promoted to PAO for Group III. In addition to serving as a PAO, Capt. Bruton held emergency services specialty qualifications ratings for observer and scanner.

Cadets of the squadron held Capt. Bruton in high regard because of his prior experience as a U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. and Drill Instructor, as well as having been named Outstanding Freshman Cadet in the Air Force ROTC program at Texas Christian University in 1955.

Prior to dedicating his time to CAP, Bruton had a long career as radio and television broadcast journalist.  His radio career began in 1955 as an announcer at KCNC 870 in Fort Worth, Texas, working shifts with famed country star Willie Nelson.  In 1956, he moved to KXOL 1360 and became the first permanent all night DJ in Dallas-Fort Worth.

During his tenure at KXOL, he introduced the Rock n’ Roll format to north Texas.  He had the distinction of working with famous persons such as Bob Schieffer, George Carlin, Rod Roddy and Bob Allen.

Bruton’s time in broadcasting included historical highs and lows.  In November 1963, he was assigned to report on President John F. Kennedy’s trip to Dallas, as well as his tragic assassination.  The following year, as operations manager of WFAA AM/FM Dallas, Bruton interviewed the Beatles during their first U.S. tour.

After his outstanding experience in radio and TV, as well as numerous telecommunications business ventures which included early activity in the innovative business of Satellite Music Network, Bob Bruton was elected to the Texas Radio Hall of Fame.

As the last symbol of Capt. Bob Bruton’s dedication to Civil Air Patrol, his family requested that anyone who wished to send their sympathies in his memory were invited to make a contribution to the Dallas Composite Squadron.  The squadron is grateful for and will always remember Capt. Bob Bruton.

Civil Air Patrol, the longtime all-volunteer U.S. Air Force auxiliary, is the newest member of the Air Force’s Total Force, which consists of Regular Air Force, Air National Guard and Air Force Reserve, along with Air Force retired military and civilian employees. CAP, in its Total Force role, operates a fleet of 550 aircraft and performs about 85 percent of continental U.S. inland search and rescue missions as tasked by the Air Force Rescue Coordination Center and is credited by the AFRCC with saving an average of 70 lives annually. Civil Air Patrol’s 58,000 members nationwide also perform homeland security, disaster relief and drug interdiction missions at the request of federal, state and local agencies. Its Airmen additionally play a leading role in aerospace education and serve as mentors to more than 24,000 young people currently participating in the CAP cadet program. Civil Air Patrol received the Congressional Gold Medal in 2014 in honor of the heroic efforts of its World War II veterans. Congressionally chartered 74 years ago, the nonprofit organization also participates in Wreaths Across America, an initiative to remember, honor and teach about the sacrifices of U.S. military veterans.
