Alpine 2011

[UPDATE NOVEMBER 2011:  The Alpine exercise for 2011 was cancelled due to unexpected U.S. Government budgetary constraints.  It may be delayed until later in the winter, or it may be held next year at the same time.  We will leave some of the materials below since it may become relevant again for next year.]

Alpine is one of the largest and most fun events put on by TX Wing each year.  It's basically a weekend long event that is focused solely on training aircrews and the Air Branch side of operations.  The event is held at E38 airport in Apline, TX and the base hotel is the Hampton Inn on the SW end of town.  As of Monday October 17, the Hampton Inn and most other hotels listed in the ops plan were full, so you will need to make reservations some other hotel in town.  One hotel that had rooms as of Monday October 17 was Antelope Lodge, which can be reached at 800 880 8106 or 432 837 2451.

If you're planning on going, please read this document carefully - especially section 1.C!  You must fill out a Texas Wing Form 17a and have it signed by Ian Jaeger.  The form is at:  http://www.txwgcap.org/wing_publications/forms.htm  Fill it out carefully with the information that is requested by the Ops Plan.

The Dallas squadron has reserved its own plane N4817C (C172) and is taking seat assignments on a first come / first served basis.  If enough people go, Wes Schlenker will be flying his C210 to Alpine on Friday afternoon. Passengers flying in the C210 will split the flight costs, at around $110 per person round trip  - but it'll be a much faster, more comfortable trip than the 172, which will be funded by CAP.

If you'd like to be considered for a seat in either plane please send your request via email to Lt. Schlenker at schlenker@sbcglobal.net or Capt. Jaeger (find their emails via eServices if you don't have them handy).  You'll need to include your weight and rough weight of your bag.  PLEASE PACK LIGHT - Bags should not be more than a small backpack and should not weigh more than 20 lbs, or a little more in the C210.

Please stay tuned to this page for seat assignments.

UPDATE 10/15/2011

Email received from Gwynn Groggel:

All Texas Wing Members:

Given good weather, we are all set for Alpine.  We are based again this year at the Hampton Inn in Alpine. If you do not have room reservations, please call there first (1-432-837-7344), We need to have the whole hotel occupied with CAP so that we can use the breakfast room area for the mission. We do have a hanger at the airport for staging. Vans will run from the hanger to the hotel on a regular basis.

To clarify, if you submitted a 17a, we are planning for you to be there.  If you are thinking about coming, please ensure that I have your 17a by Friday, Oct. 21st.   If you have changes in your crew or did not include aircraft information, please update your 17a and resubmit with information in boxes 16, 18 and 22. We will be inputting the inbound sorties into WMIRS.  If you determine that you are not coming, please let us know that also.

On your 17a also, please tell us what your training requirements are in box 20:
1) Mt. Pilot initial training
2) Mt. Pilot requalification
3) Staff position (specify request)
3) Mission Pilot training
4) scanner/observer training (limited availability)
5) any other requests
The more information that you provide the easier it is for us to do the planning.

I will send out an email to confirm final attendance early the week before along with instructions for flight release and other last minute information. That same email list will be used to provide notification of cancellation due to weather.  If you do not get an email by Tuesday, Oct. 25th, please let me know. I will be using the email address that you provided on your 17a.

Any questions, please email me.
